pollock + fmri = art+neuroscience+economics

It is a known fact that most aesthetic industries (architecture , fashion, 2d-3d design, fine arts) are based on a star system where there’s a positive correlation between the creator’s reputation and the value of works generated.

Taking Pollock  as my focus -whose work has always polarized critics ( is his work art or painterly fart?)- I want to explore the effects of stardom (cultural value attributed to the artwork) on artistic evaluation. If there’s such a thing as the pure essence of artwork , popularity of the artist is should not have that much effect on how much you “like” the work. Two different groups of test subjects* will be exposed to a series of Pollock paintings while they’re being scanned by fMRI. The results will be compared as to see which parts of the brain were activated.

More info on fMRI and this project will be provided soon! STAY TUNED.
